Episode 421- MONSTER A-GO GO (with short: CIRCUS ON ICE)

The movie is a hilarious bit of b/w 1965 sci-fi made by Bill Rebane, the guy who later brought you The Giant Spider Invasion. The state involves an astronaut returning to Earth as a radioactive “monster” and the efforts to come by him. The film has a surprise ending which I won’t give away here in case there are any MST3K fans about to acquire this area that haven’t seen it. I will say that the surprise, if you can call it that, will construct you groan, and Joel and the `Bots obtain some hilarious jokes at the film’s expense when the so-called great surprise is revealed. The writers at MST3K were often at their best when the films were at their worst, and this episode is no exception. The extreme budget is readily apparent in everything about this film, like the awful sound quality, the acting, direction and props (or lack of them) . For example, there’s one especially laughable scene wherein an actor is forced to form a ringing noise to simulate a telephone ringing instead of having an dependable sound accomplish of a telephone ring! This b/w feature was filmed in 1957, but never saw the light of day till it was released on video in 1993 and then appeared on Mystery Science Theater. An inventor is working on a machine that will allow him to mutter to the listless. One of his fellow boarding house tenants is murdered, so they supposedly exercise his invention to have a séance and impart with the victim and explain the murderer. There’s lots of inaction in the middle before the climactic séance scene and (yes, another) surprise ending. Dreary and dead, but kindly for some laughs, especially with the crew of the SOL. The short, The Selling Wizard, is only slightly livelier, but is comic when the MST3K gang gives it the usual treatment. It’s a classic bit of American advertising by the Anheuser-Busch Company that gets an laughable and merciless MST3K treatment.

Episode 902- PHANTOM PLANET

Any movie with Richard Kiel as a huge grotesque monster can’t be a total extinguish. An SF flick made in 1961 in unlit and white, it has everything you’d expect: stiff acting, rubber suit monsters, sparkling girls in scanty attire, and cheesy special effects. The legend involves an Earth astronaut finding his method onto a wandering “phantom planet” where the humanoid inhabitants are advanced and gape unbiased like earthlings, only extremely exiguous by comparison. I’ve read that most of Mr. Sloane’s movies are of a less reputable type (wink, wink) than dreadful SF, but no matter what your taste you won’t want to notice anything else by him after you’ve seen this garbage. If possible, it’s less animated than Manos Hands of Fate! The seeming intentional humor in the film is about as droll as a reveal atomize, so it’s not that easy for the MST3K writers to win humor out of it, however, it is goofy enough and poorly made enough to give them something to expend and the destroy result is laughable enough to be worth it for viewers. The MST3K writers must have really had to suppress their gag reflexes in order to get a laughable episode out of this one, but we back from their sacrifice.

These four shows all relate a strong anguish even if the films old-fashioned in them do not. The variety of films mature should show spicy to most viewers and there’s a diminutive something for everyone. Everything in this situation is level-headed funnier and more fresh than nearly anything you’ll accept on TV before or since these aired, even if one or two of these are not on your favorites list. Monster A-Go Go is so hilarious that I’d recommend the location for that one alone. Now Rhino Video, how about Rocketship X-M, King Dinosaur, Lost Continent, Wild Rebels, Outlaw and Magic Voyage of Sinbad for the next few sets! Please publish more MST3K episodes soon!

Rhino has been doing a titanic job with the MST3K dvds including letting fans vote on the episodes they would most like to peep. Two of my celebrated choices made it to this collection and I cannot wait to demonstrate these to my friends. The first is “Hobgoblins” which unbiased astounds you that adults actually made this film. The garden-tool fight alone is worth the state. The second is the “Tedious Talk Serve” which has some of the best dreadful acting including the scientist who has the most annoying attitude. The boarding house dinner scene has got to be the worst mixture of over-the-top poor acting and rambling voice-overs in any movie.

I read somewhere that the overwelmingly red glance of American Beauty is a symbol for blood and roses. Represented in the film by the flower petals in Lester Burnham’s fantasies, and the blood spilt when the sadness that hovers beneath bears its face. The title of American Beauty does not refer to the radiant surfaces that screen the disaster of these people, but the beauty of their souls when dealing with that inconvenience. Many reviewers have considered the title to be ironic, it isn’t. I’ve heard Kevin Spacey say that this film is about context, because taken out of context the behaviour of these characters seem bizzare and even phsycotic, but out with in the context of their messy lives or indeed anybody’s life, it seems natural. If I thunder you that Kevin Spacey plays a character who is obsessed with the belief of sleeping with his daughter’s best friend, a daughter who constantly anounces her hatred of her parents, a woman so obsessed with appearances that happiness is but a memory to her, a loner who makes his living as a drug dealer with a firm rigid father living in denial about his son and himself, you would guess that there would be no one to like in this film. You would be snide. This film is magical in the procedure it lets identify with these characters, care for them and disaster about their outcome. Infact the ideas of American Beauty are nothing current. The persuit of happiness through the abanodoning of materialistic possesions and the satisfaction of primal, animal and natural desires was the staunch same premise for Fight Club. This could be a middle veteran version of that film. The family turmoil closely resembles Ang Lee’s The Ice Storm 1998, and like that film, American Beauty ends in tragedy. But as with all masterpieces its not the “point” that counts, but how you catch there. Objective like the fact that anything unique you learn in life is the history you don’t know, most originality in movies is the movies you haven’t seen and the novel’s you haven’t read. The fact that the film remains a masterpiece is a credit to the execution of those ideas, not their originality. Our hero is Lester Burnham a man who goes quits his job, gloomy mails his boss, and goes wild for a year. His sprint of self-discovery is not what your average citizen would call fair, yet we aloof sympathise. My favourite scene in the film is where Lester meets Ricky(Wes Bently) outside a share. Ricky sells marijuana for a living and makes a lot of money. Lester tells him that when he was his age he “flipped burgers all summer long” for very puny money. “That sucks” says Ricky, “No actually it was fantastic.” The heart of the film is this scene, Lester’s yearning for those years where his whole life was ahead of him, when he believed he coul do anything, when he wasn’t such a “loser”. This purity is the Beauty to which the title refers. Ricky Fitts is the boy next door, a loner who likes to film people. His father is a rigid military man. Both Wes Bently and Chris Cooper who play father and son respectively give monumental performance equal to Kevin Spacey’s oscar winner. Their family is a inequity to Lester’s, and in its tragedy, emotional complexity and heart demolish exceeds it. Ricky’s catatonic mother is perhaps what Lester would have become had he not taken charge of his life. I have tried to explain this film, but its not a film that can be defined. It is one to be experienced. If I speak that the peruse of a paper bag blowing in the wind will amaze you, you secure it very funny indeed. The awakening might be due to a disturbing understanding or feeling, but the wake-up call changes Lester and allows him to realize that there’s always time to erase his “forced-image” and be the person he really is. This is all a set-up for a droll, disturbing and tragic movie.

I don’t know about everybody else, but my mind was literally racing around when this movie was playing before my eyes. It’s one of those films that allows you to acquire up on something different upon each viewing. As I said in the beginning of the review, this film has a number of layers to it. There’s so many different meanings and points to the film that it is nearly impossible to report them all in one small review. Besides, the fun piece of the movie is discovering these meanings and points for yourself. You know a film is successful when you totally lose yourself to it and allow it to challenge you in every arrangement. The film is crafted flawlessly and doesn’t have a wasted miniature in it.

The acting from Kevin Spacey is really a explore to behold. He gives his character all of the good needs and feelings that is indispensable for the authenticity of his role.
